I've been catching up on watching things I've recorded on Tivo lately. Trying to get them watched before they get deleted. Today I decided to let it run while I worked. I started with all of the CBS Sunday Morning Shows I haven't watched in forever. There was one episode from July that I thought was interesting. It was about animals. Apparently, only about 10% of the animals in the world have been documented and named. Others however, have been named numerous times. In an effort to reduce multiple names of animals, plants and marine life researchers have created a data base that lists animals and their respective names. The data base can be accessed by anyone and people can even post pictures of animals that scientists can then verify and file in the appropriate place.
The site is called
Encyclopedia of Life. It is highly functional and user friendly. There is a video tour that will give you pointers on how to use the site. Eventually the site would like to be able to categorize species by location. Wouldn't it be interesting to research all the birds that live in your area. If you are taking a trip to an area you could research what animals you might find there. One fact that I found extremely perplexing is that there is not a complete species listing anywhere in the world.
